As the physicist Steven Weinberg said, "The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless." But what specifically is the "point" that disappears along with religion? For me, what disappeared was the comfort of not having to think for myself, of being able to accept "the" truth I was taught and not having to face the abyss that was always there, though my parents, teachers, and ministers tried their best to hide it from me "for my own good." Like you, I do feel the need to fill that void, but for me, it's as simple as deciding what I really love, enjoy, and consider important--and that is humanism. |
